Summer Entertaining at Home: How to Style Your Kitchen Island and Home Bar

In South African homes, the party always ends up in the kitchen. However beautifully you set the lounge, guests will gather around the island with a drink while the braai heats up or the last dish comes together. With summer and the festive season on the way, it's the perfect time to make that space as comfortable and good-looking as it is practical.

1. Counter height or bar height?

This is the most common mistake we see, so measure before you buy. Measure from the floor to the underside of your countertop:

  • Counter height (around 90cm) needs a counter stool with a seat height of about 60 to 65cm.
  • Bar height (around 105cm) needs a bar stool with a seat height of about 75 to 80cm.

You want roughly 25 to 30cm between the seat and the underside of the counter, which leaves enough room for legs without anyone feeling like a child at the grown-ups' table.

2. Get the spacing right

Allow about 60cm of counter length per stool, measured from the centre of one to the centre of the next. Wider stools, or stools with arms, need closer to 70cm. Squeezing in an extra seat always looks tempting, but guests will be bumping elbows all evening.

3. Choose stools that suit how you live

If the island is where the family eats breakfast every day, go for comfort: a backrest and a footrest make a big difference. The Highveld Bar Chair (pictured above) and its sibling, the Highveld Counter Chair, are made for lingering, with a supportive back and a strong, grounded presence.

If the island is mostly for quick coffees and perching while you cook, a lighter backless stool keeps sightlines open and tucks neatly under the counter. The Moyo Counter Stool and Inyoni Counter Chair are great options, and for a relaxed, natural look, the Sabi Bar Stool brings woven texture.

4. Style the island, but keep it useable

An island is a working surface first, so keep styling to one end or the centre and leave plenty of space clear. A simple formula:

  • A large bowl of seasonal fruit (lemons, naartjies, mangoes in summer).
  • A board or tray holding oil, salt and a small plant or herbs.
  • One vase with a few stems, kept low so it doesn't block conversation.

5. Set up a home bar

You don't need a dedicated bar to entertain well. A section of the counter, a sideboard or even a trolley works perfectly, as long as everything guests need is gathered in one place.

Start with a statement ice bucket. The Safari Plated Ice Bucket and the Safari Strap Ice Bucket bring a lodge-inspired, leather-trimmed look that feels special without being fussy. For a lighter, natural feel, the Rattan and Bronze Ice Bucket and matching Wine Cooler are perfect for a summer table.

Gather glasses, bottles and a small bowl of citrus on a tray so the whole setup can move from the kitchen to the stoep. The Serengeti Drinks Tray with Handles is built for exactly that.

6. Light it low

Bright kitchen downlights are great for cooking but harsh for entertaining. Once the food is ready, dim them and let pendants over the island, or a lamp on the counter, set the mood.

The short version

  • Measure first: counter stools for about 90cm counters, bar stools for about 105cm.
  • Allow about 60cm per stool.
  • Choose backs and footrests for everyday dining, backless for quick perching.
  • Style one area of the island and keep the rest clear.
  • Gather your home bar on a tray with a statement ice bucket.
  • Dim the downlights once guests arrive.
